Motorcyclist Hit by Car in Three-Vehicle Accident

A lane on the 22000 block of College Hills has been blocked due to a three vehicle accident at the intersection of S College Hills and Sac Ave.

Lorrie Keating was driving her maroon 2014 Hyundai when she was struck from behind by a motorcyclist who then flew into oncoming traffic and was hit by a car.

"I was driving down College Hills going down to five points (the intersection at Ave. N), [doing the] speed limit. I was in the left-hand land and a car in front of me stopped to turn--make a left-hand turn onto Sac. I stopped and the motorcycle behind me didn't and he went right into my back end," Keating said. "He flipped off the bike into oncoming car from the other direction. he got underneath the car and was dragged. He's ok as far as i know, but he's already been taken away and the cops are here now, checking it out.

"The car that he was pinned under, he was completely under it," she continued. "His head was near the driver's side front wheel well. A bunch of people got out, lifted the car up and rolled it back out so they could get him out. There's another young lady here that provided--I think she works at a...local daycare, so she has first aid experience so she was taking care of him until the ambulance got here. Another man jumped in with this young girl...she was very upset, but another man sat down with her until the police came and got her calmed down."

Currently, the severity of the motorcyclist's injuries has not been released.

Update 2:55 p.m.

An officer on scene confirmed Keating's story in the official report to media. The motorcyclist was riding a Ural when the accident took place. He was taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. The motorcyclist's legs went between the tires of the '97 Honda Civic, but he was not run over by the tires, the officer said. He was cited for failure to control speed. He was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.

The call came in at 2:03 p.m.

Officers Catch Druggie After Fence Foils Escape Plans

A San Angelo man who attempted to flee two officers after a traffic stop Wednesday was quickly caught and detained after he failed to jump a fence.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., Detective T. Griffith was working the Traffic Safety Program when he observed a 2001 GMC Jimmy SUV fail to yield right of way in the 600 block of Cottonwood. Det. Griffith conducted a traffic stop, however as soon as the vehicle came to a halt, the driver, 27-year-old Juan Alvarez, leapt out of the vehicle and ran.

As Det. Griffith pursued the suspect he called for assistance, and San Angelo Lake and Park Officer T. Berrie responded. Berrie arrived to find Alvarez attempting to go over a 6 foot wooden fence. Upon seeing Berrie, Alvaraz thought better of the climb and instead attempted to make it over a shorter chain link fence, unsuccessfully. Officer Berrie and Det. Griffith caught the suspect and took him to the ground, and after a brief scuffle in which the officers overpowered him, Alvarez was put into handcuffs and placed under arrest.

Alvarez was searched and a plastic baggie was found in his pocket containing suspected marijuana along with several clear plastic baggies. While checking the area around where Alvarez had attempted to go over the wooden fence, more plastic baggies similar to the ones in his pocket were found. Several of the plastic baggies contained a white crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.  Also located was another plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana.

Alvarez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and booked in for Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance equal to 4grams, less than 200 grams, Possession of Marijuana less than 2 ounces, Evading Arrest Detention with a Previous Conviction. Additionally Alvarez was found to have a warrant issued by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Division of Pardon and Parole for a Parole Violation.

San Angelo Motorcycle Officer Chases and Arrests Evading Suspect

At approximately 12:30 p.m. today, San Angelo Police Officer John Palmer observed a white 2010 Mitsubishi Galant with an expired inspection sticker in the 2600 block of Sunset Dr.    Officer Palmer immediately activated the motorcycle’s emergency lights and sirens, however; the driver refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

You could hear the cycle's sirens over Palmer’s cool, low voice in his calls to dispatch over the radio giving position reports.

The suspect continued to flee by traveling south on Sunset Dr. towards Knickerbocker and by running the red light while turning left onto Knickerbocker.  The suspect continued to flee while traveling east on Knickerbocker and reached speeds of 55 mph in an attempt to evade Officer Palmer.  The pursuit ended as the vehicle turned right onto Industrial Dr. and then into the Stadium Oaks Apartment Complex parking lot.  Officer Palmer was able to arrest the suspect at this time without any further incident.

The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Daniel Blackburn of San Angelo.   Blackburn was the only occupant of the vehicle and no vehicles were damaged or persons injured as a result of the pursuit or the arrest.  Blackburn was wanted for two Tom Green County Warrants and was charged with Evading Arrest/Detention by Vehicle and received citations for Driving While License Suspended, Expired Motor Vehicle Inspection, and Disregard Traffic Signal.

Demolition At Original Lake View Campus Attracts Many Spectators

An important chapter in Lake View history is coming to a close, with the demolition operations underway on the original campus at 4113 Bowie Street.

Steve Taylor with King Consultants said the project is going well.

“They wanted us to make a pile of bricks for people to be able to take for a souvenir,” he said. “The problem is that back during the WPA days--when they built these old buildings--the brick was structurally attached to the red tile that the main wall was built from, so it’s not like a brick façade like a house would be, but we found one end where we were able to get some good bricks for folks who want one.

“We’ve been up here working for the school since the bond election,” he said. “There was a lot of asbestos and we had to do a full abatement on it.”

Taylor said he thought the original structure was built in 1908, with additions built as the community grew.

“I saw one plaque that had a date of 1928, and you know this building lost its entire roof in a tornado in 1953,” he said. “I was told they condemned the building, but they were able to put a new roof on and get it back in operation.

“The demolition is scheduled to last three weeks,” he said. “They’ll be getting trucks in here Monday to start hauling everything off.”

One building was already gone Thursday morning and the crew was making headway on one of the older buildings of the campus.

Oscar Gill has been stopping by to take pictures and keep up with the demolition process. He knows every inch of the campus intimately.

“I went all twelve years here,” he said. “I graduated in 1956 and we were the second class to go through the new school and there were 78 of us.

“You know I’ve driven by this darn place for 20 years and never snapped a picture of the original building, so now that they are tearing it down I’ve been keeping tabs on it,” he said.

Gill pointed to a portion of the structure close to where the wrecking machine was working.

“I was in that part of the building when the tornado came through here,” he said. “I was thinking about how this building stood through the storm, but it’s no match for that track-hoe over there.

“It wasn’t scary at all while it was happening,” he said, remembering the afternoon of May 11, 1953 when the area was flattened by a tornado that resulted in 13 fatalities. “I was in the backside of this building right here, and then we finally got to where we could stand up and look outside, and all the houses were nothing but piles of rubbish. That’s the only time I really got worried, because you get worried about your family, you know.

“I had a nephew who was upstairs in the middle part and I went up there to see if he was alright, there were all the elementary kids and, you know, it was all fun and games to them,” he recalled. “Later, we came out and my car was parked right over here, and we had to run over a roof that was in the middle of the road...”

Gill also worked on a crew that built the Quonset-style gymnasium at one end of the property after his first hitch in the armed forces.

“I worked on the old gym when I got out of the service,” Gill said. “I worked for Templeton Brothers Construction putting it up in 1961, but I don’t think it was fully operational until about 1963.”

Gill re-entered the military and served another 23 years, earning his college degree in the process. After he got out the second time he earned a teaching certificate and became a math teacher at San Angelo Central High School for several decades.

James Dickey also came by to watch the crew at work.

“All my kids came here,” he said. “I have four sons and a daughter who all went to school here...I just stopped to have a look, I’m fascinated by it. I kind of hate to see it go, but you know it had some asbestos in it and it was probably time.”

According to information on their website, Lake View was organized as Common School District #1 in 1905. One teacher taught seven students in first through seventh grades. In 1923, a new building was erected with eight classrooms because the enrollment had grown to 44 students with four teachers on staff.

When Lake View first became an independent school district 1928, they constructed a high school building with eight rooms and an auditorium was added. At that time the enrollment was 87 students. The older gym and three additional elementary rooms were added in 1936.

The district built a new high school right after the war in 1946.  They turned the existing high school into a junior high and added a cafeteria, band hall and shop building. At that time the enrollment was up to 1,057 with a staff of 35 teachers.

The tornado of 1953 caused $235,000 worth of damage to the school buildings and equipment, but the community rallied and the repairs were completed in time for classes to start on schedule the next year.

Santa Rita Elementary Nominated to Blue Ribbon School

Words of encouragement were passed along to the students at Santa Rita Elementary School Friday, when the campus celebrated their nomination to a National Blue Ribbon School.

Central cheerleaders got everyone pepped up on the campus grounds before ASU soccer and football players stepped up to talk to the children about the importance of dedication and good grades.

State Representative Drew Darby attended, addressing the group of fidgety students with his grandson, William Davis, at his side. By means of analogy, Darby commended the students on how well they’ve done this year and pushed them to keep striving for excellence. “You don’t finish the race until you cross the finish line, right?” he asked, as little voices responded back in tandem, No!“What we’re here to do today is encourage you to finish this race,” he continued.

Darby told the children that Santa Rita’s nomination was a big deal, noting that last year, no Texas schools were nominated as blue ribbon schools. This year, he said, there are 26 in the state. Those schools that have been nominated will then be assessed in Washington, and on Sept. 1, the winners will be announced.

“This is the first time that a San Angelo school—to our knowledge—has gotten the opportunity to be nominated and go on to the big competition in Washington,” SAISD Superintendent Dr. Carol Ann Bonds said, taking the mic after Darby was finished speaking.  “It wasn’t because of me and representative Darby, it was because of you and everything you do in your school,” she said, leaning down and changing her tone to speak to the children.

As the Chief of Police approached Dr. Bonds to give his own address, school staff played the theme from “Cops”, and laughter broke out in the crowd of children, teachers and parents. “I loved school,” he said. “I had perfect attendance all the way through my freshman year…so I just want to encourage you and I want to encourage the parents and staff to just keep going.”

The afternoon’s activities continued with recognition of former PTO members, a teacher hula-hoop contest and math table contests among the children. A cart with a PA system had been wheeled out from the gym and provided music for the festivities.

The blue ribbon nomination is based on multiple factors, including the school’s performance on the STAAR Test and on other criteria.  According to parents at Friday’s event, the students at Santa Rita perform traditionally above average on the tests each year.

“It’s a great feeling. It makes you feel just happy that you know your kids are going to be prepared for what’s to come,” said Kristi von Rosenberg, mother of second grader Freddie Ann von Rosenberg. “She loves school and she’s thrived here. [She loves] the teachers, all the activities they do, the school spirit—so far all the teachers that she’s had have been just amazing.”

Dark, Uncontrolled Intersection Ends Plans for Family Fun at Rodeo

The late model Honda Odyssey was northbound on Volney Ave., headed to the rodeo when she crossed into the uncontrolled intersection with 22nd St. The intersection is dark and poorly lit.  The dark blue Pontiac Grand Am was headed east on 22nd and the two vehicles met near the middle of the intersection.

The Odyssey hit the Grand Am near the passenger side rear door causing the Grand Am to spin 90 degrees. The Odyssey lost control and ran into the vacant lot on the northeast corner of the intersection.

The Honda’s tailpipe and front grill were torn from the vehicle as it traveled across the relatively rough terrain of the vacant lot and came to a stop approximately the back half of the empty lot.

The female driving the Odyssey was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Investigating San Angelo Police Officer Jones said that there will be no moving citations issued, but the driver of the Grand Am was operating his vehicle with a suspended license and will be cited.

Firemen Work to Save Briskets in Smokehouse BBQ Fire

Smoke fills the air at Smokehouse Bar BQ, but isn't brisket cooking. The building, located next to the Village Shopping Center has been caught in a blaze.

SAFD Ladder 1, two trucks, one fire rescue unit, one ambulance and several SAPD police vehicles are on scene.

The fire appears to be under control. Updates to come.

Update 10:10 p.m.

Firemen are working hard to save the brisket. All flames have been extinguished, and the fire is under control.

Battalion Chief Fred Barnett explains that there are 30-50 briskets inside on a rotisserie. Firemen cut off oxygen to the fire in order to stave off the flames and save the briskets for owners, as a loss of the product would be a large expense. Firemen have been here before and dispensed foam, which cost the owners a lot of money. Since then, they've learned to maintain the fire and contact the owners so that they may open the door and attempt to save the product.

The owner says there are 3-4 cases of brisket inside, and a build up of grease is suspected to have fueled the fire.

Update 10:35

The fire department has shut off all the gas and determined that the gas was not the cause. The grease was not draining as it should, as it more viscous than in summer months, resulting in a small fire.

The FD is leaving one unit and a crew to observe the building and will assist the the owners turn the gas back on and get the rotisserie cookers going again so that they will be ready for lunch.

The owners estimate the the value of the products to be around $600

The Battalion Chief said this is excellent training for the team.

No water was used. The fire was starved of oxygen to keep it under control.

Retailers Enjoy Brisk Business During Stock Show & Rodeo

It’s the largest annual event in town, so it’s no surprise that that the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo generates revenues that help the bottom line of every business.

The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce reports that the rodeo brings millions of dollars to town every year.

Pamela Miller with the Chamber said this year will be a little different because the event featured a shorter than usual slack schedule and longer than normal rodeo. Miller points out that the majority of out of town visitors are in town for the stock show portion of the event.

Miller said the Chamber’s economic-impact numbers reflect only money spent on hotels, food and fuel by the visitors. In 2013 the Chamber estimated that some 19,000 people would visit San Angelo from out of town between the slack events and the Stock Show & Rodeo proper, and their economic estimates do not include the retail dollars spent here during that time.

Jennifer at Blair’s Western Wear said they see increased sales associated with the rodeo every year.

Local businesses target their advertisements to help reel in the extra customers and the event helps keep them in the black.

Mack Harper at Jim Bass Ford said the event coincides with ‘Truck Month’ and they have vehicles with special option packages such as the “Shoot Out Specials” to cater to the rodeo crowd.

The downtown area businesses see some of the highest foot traffic of the year during these two weeks.

M.L. Leddy Boots has customers who order footwear more than a year in advance so they will be ready to pick up while they are in town for the rodeo. Sammy Farmer said that if you were to order a pair of boots today they would be ready in about 15 months from now.

The San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo has been a major attraction since it was first held in 1932.

San Angelo’s VFW Post honored Holiman Elementary School’s Susan Nickias as their Citizenship and Education Teacher of the Year for grades K-5, in her classroom at the school on Friday.

Her students watched as the 4th grade math and science teacher was presented with a plaque and certificate by Post 1815 Commander Wayne McShan, who was accompanied by fellow veterans Darrell Elliot, a Past Post Commander and Robert Dillon.

Also in attendance were San Angelo Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Carol Ann Bonds and Holiman Elementary Principal Dave Danner.

Nickias has taught at Holiman for seven years and was clearly humbled by the award.

“I am overwhelmed,” she said. “I just do what I do, and I don’t think it’s anything special.”

The students were delighted to see their teacher honored and applauded enthusiastically for her at the ceremony.

He's passed the reigns over to what he calls "the younger generation" now, but the event still holds a soft spot in his heart. Buck also tells the story of when he met the other Buck Owens, and claims that he's still the original.

SAPD Dream Team Work City Streets by Day With Confidence in Each Other

“It was a hunch,” says SAPD Patrol Officer Jed Polnick. “The criminal element is around there. It’s like a little hub for criminal activity.”

Polnick and his partner Officer Louis Cortinas have been working together for almost two years. Each describes his partner as a hard worker who is willing to go the extra mile, and on Feb. 3, that extra mile paid off when the two located and arrested the Medical Arts Pharmacy burglar five minutes after leaving the scene.

“I think we felt good too because we had no clue who he was, we just knew he was in a silver Alero,” Polnick continues. “We ended up finding him just out of just doing the extra mile and trying to find the car or a car similar to that in the area. We didn’t know him, nobody recognized him, so we didn’t have nothing.”

On Feb. 3, Polnick and Cortinas received a call of a burglary at the Medical Arts Pharmacy and headed that direction to conduct an investigation. Upon arrival, it was determined that the burglar had broken in through a window, and seemed to feel comfortable in the place, arriving first around midnight, leaving, and returning again around 6:00 a.m. in a different change of clothes.

Surveillance video from the pharmacy revealed good pictures of the suspect and his vehicle, a silver 4-door Oldsmobile Alero. As soon as they’d witnessed the footage, Polnick and Cortinas headed to the hotbead of criminal activity to scan the parking lot. Having found nothing there, they relocated to another location known for high criminal traffic and spotted the car immediately.

“We see this car and I’m running it,” Polnick says, “then he (Cortinas) looks up and sees this guy walk out of the motel room, then he runs up there and gets him and it just kind of went from there. He was wearing the same clothes he had on that morning.”

Polnick said that while burglar had been denying everything about the incident, that his reactions tp questioning made his guilt evident. “He was telling us that it wasn’t him, but by the way he was acting like we knew that he knew what we knew, but he didn’t want to say anything.”

Ultimately, the suspect, 22-year-old Nickolas Jones, was arrested for burglary of a building and taken to jail. The drugs that he stole were estimated to be a $15,000 wholesale value and were typical of the types sold on the street.

“It was awesome,” Cortinas said. “I felt really good that we caught him fast. Working in the jail too, I spoke with a lot of burglars, a lot of them. They would tell me how they did it and stuff like that and I would ask them, ‘Don’t you feel bad that you’re taking from people?’ and they’re like ‘Yeah, kind of, but I need my stuff.’

“It just gets kind of frustrating when you work hard and everyone works hard for their stuff—just like the pharmacists do. They worked hard to get where they’re at now, and catching him, it felt real good. He needs to pay for what he did. He needs to suffer the consequences.”

Both Polnick and Cortinas came to San Angelo from Sheriff’s Offices in other municipalities, citing a need for a change.

Polnick grew up in Brownwood and worked at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for five years before coming to San Angelo. “Growing up, my dad was a game warden and I just grew up watching him get ready for work, and when he would get home he would tell me about what all happened and I rode with him, it kind of just got in my blood, I guess.”

Polnick said that although he was intrigued by the work of a game warden, the winters are just too slow. He’d rather have action year round. He decided to move to San Angelo in January 2012. The reason he gave was “just the better pay than other Sheriff’s Offices. I’ve got cousins that live here, so it was just time for a change,” he said, adding, “Brownwood’s only like 30,000 people. There’s more to do and it was just time to get out of there since I grew up there.”

It wasn’t until April 2012 that Polnick’s and Cortinas’s paths would cross, but they immediately found similarities. Cortinas had been employed at the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in San Antonio where he often worked the jails, and relocated to San Angelo in need of a change.

“Like he said, change, and a smaller community [is why I chose to relocate],” Cortinas said. “I just wanted somewhere safe for my kids to grow up. Everywhere has its crime, but I thought it was going to be safer here for my kids to grow up.”

Cortinas didn’t grow up in a family of law enforcement, however he remembers feeling inspired at a young age by the officers he encountered.  “As a kid, I loved it—the whole uniform presence and I fell in love watching all the police shows. When the officers would come to school too, you know, I would be so amazed by them and everything they wore. I wanted to be just like them and get behind the wheel of a police car with the lights and sirens. There’s no other job that gives me the freedom. I love being in the car, I can do what I want and help people.”

“His favorite show was CHIPs,” Polnick interjects, half joking.

“It really was,” Cortinas says, and the two erupt in laughter. It’s an inside joke.

When the officers started at the SAPD, both worked nights, Polnick on B shift and Cortinas on the later C shift. They were working the same sector and their paths crossed on multiple occasions. By the time they’d switched to days, they’d gotten to know and trust one another fairly well.

“We just kind of clicked,” Cortinas said. “Normally, there’s like four people to each sector and you just kind of learn the people. If we go to a call together I know what he’s going to do before he does it…so it’s just—it makes you feel good that you know what’s going to happen. If something goes south, then they’ll step in.”

“I guess it’s just fun because we know how we’re going to work,” Polnick adds. “His family is friends with my family, off work we hang out. We just get along good I guess. If it came to worst, he knows I would do whatever I can, and he would do whatever—it’s kind of double-sided. He would jump in front of a bullet for me and I would do it for him.”

Currently both officers are working patrol, however would like to move to Criminal Investigations, should a position become available. It’s about the follow up, they said. On patrol, an officer files the initial report but doesn’t necessarily get involved with contacting victims afterward and determining in which direction the investigation goes.

“I like patrol…I mean, it’s fun, but I want to be a detective one day,” Polnick says. “I want to be a homicide detective, but we don’t have enough [positions] here, fortunately.”

“That’s crazy—we’ve never talked about it but that’s exactly what I want to do,” Cortinas exclaims. They don’t like to leave things unfinished.

Funnily, both say that if they were competing for a job in CID, they’d likely give it to the other. “We’d just both end up working on patrol still,” Polnick laughs.

Comparing the way they work together to co-workers in other occupations, Polnick said, “I guess it’s kind of different because we know that we could go to a call together and we might leave good or one of us might not make it home. We know that no matter what happens we would be there [for each other]. I trust him for my life, and he trusts me for his.”

Both Polnick and Cortinas can be spotted around San Angelo working Sector 3 during the day. At the moment, there aren’t any open positions in CID to compete for, but they continue to put their investigative skills to work on patrol.

Stock Show Winds Down With Premium Sale, Longhorn Show

The Premium Sale was held Saturday at the San Angelo Stock Show, the culmination of months of hard work and dedication to raise an animal good enough to fetch top dollar at the big event.

Here are some of the Champion and Reserve Champion winners talking about their animals:

Area businesses and individuals dig deep every year to buy the animals these exhibitors have invested so much time and resources in.

Earlier, at the Housley Communications Cattle Barn, they had the Longhorn shows.

Jay and Suzanne Faske were here for their fourth year at the San Angelo show. The Burleson County couple has a very large family which includes children adopted from seven different countries and they have eleven entries for the event.

They have been doing longhorn show for about nine years now and travel extensively.

“It’s quite a ride,” Faske says of travelling with so many children and animals.

She said longhorns are a good choice for them because the animals are so gentile.

“The longhorns have a very good disposition,” she said. “They work very well with the children.”

Sherry Hall lives 20 miles north of San Angelo and brought along riding steers for the Grand Entry; one of them a big fella named Rooster Cogburn.

The massive longhorns easily consent to be saddled for the event where they carry a rider for the delight of the crowd.

“We actually use a regular sized saddle,” she explains. “We just have some big ol’ cinches that go around ‘em.”

Hall is part of the West Texas Longhorn Association, which is responsible for the show. She said she was pleased that participation is up again this year.

She described what it was like to live with the gentile giants.

“They are just fabulous,” she said. “They are so sweet, and we have been blessed to travel with them and work with this organization, which is awesome for the kids. That’s why we do this -- the kids get to learn responsibility and take care of them -- and some of these kids will travel to 30 or 40 show a year.”

According to information on their website Texas longhorns are desirable for their lean meat, longevity, resistance to disease and adaptability as well as the positive personality traits mentioned by the owners.
